Mkhuzweni – Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Eswatini (NCM-E) is stepping boldly into the digital future with the rollout of Wanda, a groundbreaking health innovation designed to transform the way community support is delivered and recorded.
Today, at eMkhuzweni Health Centre, NCM-E trained 12 peer supporters and young peer mothers drawn from Ndzingeni, Mkhuzweni, Bulandzeni, Herefords, Ndvwabangeni, and Mangweni. This training marks a major leap in Eswatini’s journey toward technology-driven compassionate care.
The READY Project: A Foundation for Change
The initiative is anchored in the READY Project, a global program that empowers adolescents and young people to access healthcare, fight stigma, and build resilience. Project Coordinator Winile Dlamini introduced the project to participants, emphasizing how READY equips peer supporters with knowledge, confidence, and now—digital tools—to reach more young people with lifesaving services.
Innovation in Action: Smartphones and Wanda App
To enable their work, peer supporters received Samsung Galaxy A06s smartphones. These devices will allow them to stay connected with facilitators and beneficiaries, ensuring faster communication and better coordination.
But the real innovation is the Wanda app—a cutting-edge electronic record system named after Wanda Fox, a Brazilian transgender activist. During the session, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Hlengiwe Mhlanga led participants through practical exercises on the app.
With Wanda, peer supporters and young mothers can:
- Register new clients instantly
- Track services offered to beneficiaries
- Update viral load results with accuracy
- Facilitate safe space groups digitally
- Conduct scorecards to strengthen accountability
A Game-Changer for Community Health
By shifting from paper-based systems to Wanda’s digital-first platform, NCM-E is revolutionizing how health data is captured, managed, and used. This means faster reporting, stronger follow-up, and ultimately, better health outcomes for young people across Eswatini.
Digital Compassion in Action
NCM-E’s embrace of Wanda reflects its mission: to transform lives through compassion in action. By blending training, innovation, and technology, peer supporters and young mothers are now better equipped to walk alongside vulnerable young people, ensuring they are not only counted but also truly cared for.
This marks more than a training—it signals a new chapter of digital compassion in Eswatini’s community health response.
